Great cramped gem of a movie starring the outlaws of country music. A lot of people are comparing this tv movie to that of the fresh starring John Wayne, there is no comparison. The recent will always be a classic, and teamed legendary director John Wayne with The Duke.

But, for me it is hard not to like a film that stars Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. They all do a expansive job with their roles, and are backed up by a shapely supporting cast which includes John Schneider and Elizabeth Ashley.

The film follows the same storyline as the unusual. Will the stagecoach gain it safely to it’s destination without meeting its demise at the hands of Geronimo? Will The Ringo Kid bag his revenge against the Plummers? How can I accept out what will happen? The simple acknowledge is, capture up Stagecoach, and choose a scamper to the west with The Highwaymen.

What a thrill to survey all the member’s of the Highwaymen together in a movie and playing such memorable roles. I can only imagine the fun they all had while filming this narrate. A must spy for any fan.

Continuing his exploration of what makes a man valid, unpleasant — objective listless human– is what this film delves into, even more deeply than in the graceful “Unforgiven” (to his credit, Eastwood never pretends, as some male writers and directors do, that he understands women; instead, he admits that we are mysteries to him, and concentrates his energies on what he does understand: American men) . Refusing to subscribe to typical American cinematic over-simplifications of “noble vs. ghastly,” Clint Eastwood delivers films that acquire you realize very speedy that there is no room for such absolutes when dealing with human truths. This thesis, which he has been pursuing for some time now, perhaps starting with “Tightrope” where the line between trustworthy and nefarious blurs to invisibility, he has, with “A Perfect World,” given us a translation of John Lee Hancock’s intelligent screenplay that is both sparkling and almost too painful to acquire. Notorious by critics at the time of its relase, but completley ignored by audiences who, it seems, found Kevin Costner as an escaped convict unprejudiced too unpalatable, this film takes us on a complex scoot deep into the souls of two tortured men, Costner’s “Butch Haynes” and Eastwood’s “Red,” the Texas Ranger who is charged with running the escaped Haynes down. The past and its consequences are a continual theme in all of Eastwood’s critical works, and in this film, the ironies are neck-deep and acquire time and patience from the viewer to unravel. Even the decision by Red to commandeer the vehicle the Governer intends to wobble in the next day when President Kennedy will be in Dallas (this is 1963) brings up the question: would the Governer have been shot had he been in this vehicle instead of in the President’s car? This is one subtle example of how decision and consequence are continously explored in this most thought-provoking of films.

Kevin Costner gave probably the best performance of his life, cast against type as a complex man who cannot be called either abominable or advantageous, merely profoundly human, whose life has followed a course laid by poverty, homelessness, a suicide mother and a felonious father, a bit of high spirits, and high intelligence with nowhere to go, but most importantly, the Texas penal system as it was managed in the 60’s. Haynes’ true center, despite his acts, never wavers, and it is that just center that propels events which finally spiral out of his control and into tragedy. But we stare, clearly, that even a so-called “dreadful” man can be favorable enough to inspire pleasant, deep adore that, in the kill, redeems both him and the person whose initial action started the long chain of events that ends with the 36 hours over which this film takes dwelling (we peep who this is along the plan, and I don’t want to lessen the impact of any discoveries) . Another reviewer here implied that it was Eastwood who is responsible for Costner’s excellence in this film, but having seen so many interviews with his actors, it is generally understood that Eastwood casts his actors, then leaves them alone to collect the character and snarl him without a tall deal of interference, so it would seem that the credit is, indeed, Costner’s. Sadly, he never again worked against type, perhaps because of this film’s commercial failure, but this performance will always stand as testament to what he can do, and never is that performance better than in the house where Cajun music on the Victrola and senseless violence against a boy worthy of an age as Butch himself was when violence entered his life, combine to send him into a sort of fugue spot of memory, damage, longing, rage, and ultimately, the loss of control that brings things to a awful raze.

The boy, Philip, with whom he bonds (played beautifully by the transparent T.J. Lowther) also gives us his heart laid bare, and the rapport between the two of them is completely believable. We understand the child’s repeated choices to discontinue with Butch, and the reasons go far beyond the superficial need for a father (his is gone), and into the realm of esteem. It is from Haynes that he learns the lesson that exacts the sign of Haynes’ hasten, but then it is his care for for Haynes that makes it bearable, and even apt, for both of them, as in the raze, he becomes the protector–the man–whose job it is to abet a loved-one who can no longer aid himself.

When a film’s characters are torn apart by the ruin of a film, its viewers should be, too, and we definitely are. It is a difficult, heart-breaking amble that Clint Eastwood insists we retract with him, but taking it brings us to the point where we should open each day: from scratch. Red’s last line is, “I don’t know a da*n thing anymore,” and that is exactly the point and the purpose of this myth. We should never, ever believe we have all the answers; to do so is fatal, as Red learns. Every day we should be willing to expect our beliefs and leer assist, with honesty, at what we’ve done, and observe forward to what we’re about to do with eyes wide launch and with some sort of awareness of potential pain, and know, always, that there is no suited “us,” no unpleasant “them,” but that we’re all only human beings, deeply flawed and yet filled with the capacity for adore and connection, each of us doing the best we can.

This film has two of Hollywood’s biggest stars – Eastwood and Costner – both of whom give expansive performances. But it’s the young actor who plays the kidnapped boy who steals the display. This drama is area in Texas, early November 1963 – shortly before JFK’s fateful visit to Dallas. An escaped convict (Costner) kidnaps a boy and is on the speed from the law (Eastwood) and each of their lives are changed forever. The film is especially touching whenever it focuses on the growing relationship between the convict & boy – Costner’s portrayal of the tough escapee with a kind heart is grand and the boy is so natural and likeable. Under Eastwood’s direction the film is controlled and avoids the pitfall of melodrama. The ending is tragic yet inevitable. I assume this is one of Costner’s best performances and was surprised when the film seemed to be overlooked by the media. I loved the whole feel of the movie and cared about the characters – even some of the minor ones like the sharecropper family. I highly recommend this film.

My husband had been asking me to glance this movie with him for years – it was one of his favorites (from before we met), even though he continually called it a “chick flick”… I was hesitant to perceive it because I had the conception that it would be a black movie – and I unbiased don’t like movies that leave me blubbering & saddened for the rest of the day.

However, last weekend we finally sat down and watched it together, and I was pleasantly surprised! Although there was 1 or 2 parts that led me to yowl, it was not what I would categorize as a “black” movie – in fact, when I really judge about it, it was quite uplifting…

“Fried Green Tomatoes” weaves the life experiences of 3 very different women – 2 of them lived their youth about 50 or 60 years ago, and one is currently 40 something years old-fashioned.

The record revolves around an “primitive” woman who is sharing her & her friends life experiences with the younger, 40-something woman. This younger woman is quite wretched, feeling like a weakling who doesn’t really matter. She gains strength and a will to really LIVE through the stories shared with her. Spending time with the “frail woman” becomes an notable, life changing event for her – helping her to step-up and be the woman she truly wants to be.

This movie shows the importance of being willing to listen & learn from others – as well as the wealth of knowledge & experience that our elderly population has – if only we would select the time to hold them in discussion & listen to what they have to offer.

Overall, I give this movie “2 thumbs up”! If you’re at all fervent in human growth, and the “valid feeble days”, then this movie’s for you!

Every decade has its chick flicks that clarify those years and feature a who’s who of up-and-coming actresses mixed with veterans. In the 1980s, it was Steel Magnolias and in the 1990s it was Fried Green Tomatoes, a southern folktale based on the recent by Fannie Flagg (who also co-wrote the screenplay) .

Fried Green Tomatoes is a pleasing shot film that really evokes the rich, lush setting of the Deep South. Director Jon Avnet also uses warm colours to effect an interesting atmosphere that draws the audience in. There is trusty artistic integrity to the camerawork which gives the film a Classic Hollywood vibe.

Fried Green Tomatoes is the perfect indolent Sunday summer afternoon movie that evokes simpler times. The film makes us devour taking the time out of our busy lives to conclude and smell the roses as it were. The film espouses a simple yet famous message of tolerance and compassion towards one another but not in a preachy diagram. It is a message that is certainly applicable today (maybe even more so) making Fried Green Tomatoes even more relevant.

There are a collection of “Deleted Scenes” that are really impartial small bits of added footage tagged on at the raze of or in-between scenes. There is nothing too memorable here.

Also included, is an comical collection of “Outtakes,” featuring flubs and blown lines.

“Moments of Discovery: The Making of Fried Green Tomatoes” is an lively, endearing retrospective documentary that runs unprejudiced over an hour. There are “Production Photographs” that include behind-the-scenes pics of the savory food and also the movie crew at work.

“Poster Campaign” features various poster designs for the movie, including some really nice hand-drawn ones that are quite artistic in nature.

Finally, there is an audio commentary by director Jon Avnet. He takes us through his filmmaking process switching benefit and forth between talking about the themes of the film and production anecdotes.

This movie is a secure! It manages to deal with steady people in a realistic method without resorting to the usual easy gimmick of making the people unfavorable and hostile. The people here are not perfect, but they are sympathetic.

Also, the relationships in this family are very realistic–again without making anyone a damage or an impossible person. Whoever wrote this had a lot of conception of the relations between grown siblings and between grown children and their parents.

The film also explores some of the expansive questions of life and how significant “miniature things” are in those large questions. The mother’s admitting that she gave an incomplete version of her recipe to a friend who had admired the dish, and that she had been bothered by that and wants to beget it right–this was priceless. Also, her determination to return the library book!

The transitions of the characters are well-developed and believable. They manage to work things out without everyone suddenly becoming angelic creatures without a fault in the world.

If you like human dramas about proper but decent people, this is not a film to be missed. There are all too few like it.

This tantalizing incorperates all the elements of a magical, shapely Christmas! Tracey Neeham (Sarah) is a terrific actress and her character is someone I would like as a friend. At first I idea that Natasha Gregson Wagner was not a very superb actress because she was so “boring pan.” Then I realized that her character, Beth, is a self-centered, pasionless, joyless person until the “magic” begins. Ronny Cox, Buddy, is one of the best character actors of our time and, of course, Meredith Baxter never disappoints. An delightful, heartwarming movie for Christmas or anytime!

That first time I passe my credit card to choose something online, I did so with quite a bit of trepidation, as I had concerns about how easily some hacker type could consume my card number and rack up my debt…since then I’ve realized many sites do exercise some sort of protection against that kind of thing, but aloof, the conception of vulnerabilities lingers in my mind…and movies like Sneakers (1992) certainly don’t aid to quell those concerns…written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams), the film stars Robert Redford (Three Days of the Condor) and Sidney Poitier (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner) . Also appearing is David Strathairn (Dolores Claiborne), Dan Aykroyd (Grosse Pointe Blank), the slack River Phoenix (My Contain Private Idaho), Mary McDonnell (Independence Day), and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) .

In the film, Martin Bishop (Redford) and his colleagues operate a security company who other businesses hire to wreck into their companies, exposing where their security may be lacking. I’ve seen it a few times, the first time I saw it, it appeared to be a light movie (I’ve read that the makers of the film injected a modest amount of profanity into the script to avoid a `G’ rating, for fears the movie would have been perceived as a film for children) with a few, gaping site holes, but subsequent viewings (for me, at least), voice it to be a very rich, complex, shimmering, exquisite thriller with an safe cast and a tight storyline with petite or no mistakes, and the situation holes I originally perceived actually dealt with, many times in very subtle ways, hence the need for advise viewings (it’s well-known to pay attention to many of the miniature details provided throughout) . Redford and Poitier are the strongest cast members in the film, but they don’t necessarily advance off that draw, as they seem to understand the importance of their parts within the whole of the film, instilling a subtleness within their performances, allowing for the focus to be on the fable rather on themselves. This seems to be an positive note of their experience, and I found myself appreciating this, as often starring actors tend to be bulky of themselves, and their efforts on mask indicate it…originally it seemed to me that the character development was a bit light, but I’ve since near to feel we’re given objective exactly what’s needed for the chronicle, and anymore would have bordered on the extraneous and unnecessary. Also, it’s nice to leer a film where Dan Aykroyd plays a relatively minor fraction, doing what he’s told, having nothing to do with the writing or directing (he not only wrote but directed the one of the worst films I’ve ever seen in 1991’s Nothing But Grief) . Also, I usually tend to like women with the longer hair, but I plan Mary McDonnell, with her short hair and all, looked very heavenly and added a improbable, feminine element to this nearly all male cast with her role as Liz, a frail lover of Bishop, now assisting the group seemingly out of appreciation of Bishop’s past. Director Robinson keeps the pacing tight, and uses the talent within the film well (I supposed this is helped by the fact he also wrote the screenplay, so he has an intimate concept of the visuals he wants to note in accordance with the fable) . The McGuffin (a term invented by Alfred Hitchcock to recount the element of the film the place centers on…he would often demonstrate, but rarely account for on it, as its’ specifics were never essential, in his mind, only its’ consume in providing focus for the narrative and progressing the station) seems a bit farfetched, but the knowing yarn and the talented performances do well in creating a level of believability that got through this aspect. Another considerable feature of the film is the musical find, provided by legendary and prolific composer James Horner (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Aliens) . Usually I neglect mentioning the music within a film unless it’s either really dreadful or really safe (the latter being the case here) . I wonder how many people are aware that he started out composing for shameful budget producer Roger Corman, working on films like Battle Beyond the Stars and Humanoids From the Deep, both released 1980. A couple of minor appearances worth looking for are Donal Logue (Blade, The Tao of Steve), James Earl Jones (Definite and Reveal Worry), and Timothy Busfield (Revenge of the Nerds) . Current line from the film? When Bishop is talking to the NSA guys and responds, “I could have been in the NSA, but they found out my parents were married.”

The widescreen anamorphic characterize (1.85:1) looks reasonably gorgeous, and the Dolby Digital Surround 2.0 tracks (available in English, French, and Spanish) sound decent. Special features include an fresh theatrical trailer for the film, subtitles, informative production notes, background and filmographies of some of the cast and crew, a `making of’ featurette, and commentary track by the director. All in all a decent release of a really worthy film.

Martin Bishop’s(Robert Redford) team of maverick techies effect their living(not a enormous one) as “Sneakers”. Breaking into the security systems of high powered companies. It is the high powered companies that actually effect their pay checks. They are hired to regain the breakdowns in the systems.The team includes a blindman who is expert in sound(David Strathairn), and ex-CIA agent(Sydney Poitier), a young expert hacker(River Phoenix), and a magician at all sorts of gadgets who is probably the most paranoid person on the face of the earth(Dan Aykroyd) .What a Cast!

Martin Bishop though, has a secret he’s been keeping from his team. One that has kept him on the hasten from the government for 25 years. When the government agents offer him a chance to trim up his picture, simply by finding and retrieving a “Dark Box” venerable by a mathematical genius for decoding, Martin jumps at the chance and so do the rest of the guys(It also pays really first-rate too!) . The job seems easy enough, but what they don’t know may waste them. This “box” is so considerable in it’s capabilities, that any any Government in the world would ruin for it.

The team, also with the aid of Bishop’s ex(Mary McDonnell) goes into a high-tech action caper,that is heartstopping,inspiring, and often laughable.It’ll thrill and amaze you as they expend their weapons of knowledge to complete their mission.

The film is directed by Phil Alden Robinson, and also stars Ben Kingsley, Timothy Busfield, and James Earl Jones.You can’t go unfriendly with all these mammoth names. All the performances are terrific.

I was not totally delighted with this edition of the DVD though. Although the sound in Dolby Surround was quite fine and the anamorphic widescreen(1.85:1) was well presented there seemed to be a reddish glow hovering on all the indoor scenes(almost like a modern TV the needs the tint adjusted) . It was a minute hard on the eyes. Otherwise I probably would’ve gone 5 stars as this is one of the cleverist capers I have seen. Don’t gape for too mighty on the extras. There are a few, some production notes(no live commentary) filmographies, and a trailer. It is also captioned and has subtitles in English, Spanish and French.Maybe the newer edition has the color predicament cleaned up. It would be worth renting it at least…appreciate…Laurie

First of all, kudos to Disney for *finally* including a MANDARIN LANGUAGE AUDIO TRACK (the recent DVD had French and Spanish- no Chinese) . It’s about time!!!

Next: I have to emphatically disagree with reviewer Bill Mydo below. -You will excuse me if I utilize some tiny time defending this film against his critique; Mulan happens to be my current Disney moving movie, second only perhaps to Beauty and the Beast. Perhaps my being Chinese-American may have something to do with it, as does the fact that I strongly identify with the character’s self-doubts. Collected, I am fairly particular as to what I assume “fine art”; and it boggles and confounds me that anyone would fail to inspect the inequity between this movie and, for example, Hunchback or Hercules.

Yes, Disney’s Mulan is very remarkable a western/ American movie, made for western and American- not Asian- audiences. No, they “didn’t find it suitable”; or, not exactly. But I never expected them to, and I give them a worthy deal of credit for trying. They came quite a bit closer that I ever idea that they would. Nor do I secure this movie overly feminist (no more than Snow White or Cinderella are “chauvinist”) . Mulan may be a strong female character, but she is not Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine. Mulan is not defined by rebellion, nor by what she rejects. Instead she upholds her sense of honor as she struggles to score out who she is and where she fits in. Moreover, in a genre known for its blatant ad nauseum boy-meets-girl care for themes, I truly appreciated the downplayed understatedness of the “interest” between Mulan and Captain Shang.

As to the “commercial” aspect of the film; yes, it had its tie-ins and its merchandising. What Disney movie doesn’t? But the genuine yell is the worth of the film itself, and on this I consume exception to the review below. I absorb there is more in it than Mr. Mydo gives credit for.

The film does have its awkward moments. The scene with the match-maker and Mulan’s first entrance into the army camp are both extremely painful to watch- I do not indulge in watching anyone be utterly humiliated- not even a cartoon character (and I do not acquire that someone as quick-witted as Mulan would fumble so badly over simply coming up with a modern name) . I also obtain it somewhat irksome that one minor character, Mushu the dragon, continually steals attention away from the movie’s righteous focus. And there are a number of jokes and visual gags that closely border on PG. I found this in somewhat dreadful taste in a kid’s movie.

But these faults are counterbalanced, and more than compensated for, by the scenes that really work. The opening “brush painting” of the Gargantuan Wall; Mulan’s song (Reflections) and the ensuing scene of loving encouragement from her father; the scene where she decides to leave home; her heart-to-heart talk with Mushu at the abandoned camp in the mountains; the Imperial Palace where she is honored by the Emperor before all China… the sheer artistry of these scenes is breathtaking.

When the Special Edition DVD is released, I intend to be first in line!

I do not enjoy that I have EVER watched an sharp film that taught more of the values that I would want future generations to learn from than MULAN. I have watched this movie at LEAST 25 times and simply set – it is PROFOUND.

The movie opens with Mulan getting ready to go to the “Matchmaker.” Although, she is a shapely girl, she lacks the grace to invent a suitable impression. Devistated, she returns home. Her father tells her that “like the cherry blossoms, her season has not arrive.”

When China is invaded by the Huns, there is one line in the movie that is uttered by the emperor and it is SO insightful. The general in charge of the armies confidently announces that his men can handle this invasion. However, the emperor issues a proclamation calling all available men because, “sometimes a single grain of rice may be the deciding balance in tipping the scales.” Or – “one man may acquire a disagreement between conquest and defeat.”

In this case, it turns out to be a woman! I Care For how Mulan interacts horribly with the men at first and how she is told to leave. Mulan has to exhibit herself and she doesn’t give up.

Even after she is a hero, Mulan is disgraced when it is discovered that she is a woman. She is shunned and yet when she must reach to the rescue of China again, her comrades are trusty to her and listen to her ideas.

Throughout the movie there are the different interactions of those who acquire women for who they are and those who are stuck within stereotypes.

Mulan is a cute and VERY humorous movie with adorable songs. What makes it a Stout movie however, is the very much message that we should believe one another on our merits and character – whether we be men or women.

Talk about value for your entertainment dollar? There are 8 films in this collection, which is selling for honest under ten bucks! And the movies are spacious, if you are into 1970s camp. There are conflicts that reach about in people’s lives in every film, the conflicts usually the result of a sexual/romantic location. Somebody central to the film dies in every one of them. Really, for exploitation fare the stories are shapely compelling, but peaceful unprejudiced offbeat enough to give you the campy giggles. I would pay $10 for any one of these movies – getting 8 of them at that imprint almost makes me feel like I have stolen something.

This is the best DVD value on Amazon. Eight movies for $10 and not a dreadful one in the bunch. These B movies have some well known actors, kindly stories and decent quality. Plenty of topless nudity too. A must recall. You won’t be sorry.

This series is very suited so the feature films weren’t dreadful either. The two for the mark of one deal is well worth it too. I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone under the age of thirteen though it can be very graphic.
